
GMO Session - "Leadership - The Qualities, Techniques, and Responsibilities"
Speaker: Marie McCarther (University ½ credit)
This session will focus on qualities of leadership essential for team success. Participants will explore innovative and easy-to-learn and use strategies that facilitate optimum involvement of the team and build collaborative consensus. Participants will walk away with practical resources that will help them to be more effective in meeting current and future challenges faced by leaders today.
Speaker Bio
Dr. Marie McCarther is Senior Fellow and Program Director for the Midwest Center for Nonprofit Leadership, a community-oriented education and outreach center of the Bloch School of Business and Public Administration at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Dr. McCarther also holds an appointment as Adjunct Professor in the Bloch School of Business and Public Administration and the School of Education, where she regularly teaches graduate courses on leadership and management.
Dr. McCarther is a skilled facilitator, and she consults locally and nationally with public and private organizations on leadership development, community building, governance and board effectiveness, strategic planning, and other aspects of management and organizational effectiveness. Her work has focused on helping organizations strengthen systems of performance and accountability, including outcomes assessment, service integration, collaboration, team building, and community empowerment.
Dr. McCarther is an experienced public service executive and leader, with extensive service in education and nonprofit settings. Prior to joining the Midwest Center, Dr. McCarther served as loaned executive to Families and Children First, a non-profit comprehensive community-based child development collaboration for poor and low-income families and children that integrated the work of federal, state and local government agencies, with business and philanthropic foundations. Dr. McCarther also served for several years with the Cincinnati City Schools, where she served as Director of Elementary Education.
Dr. McCarther serves on a number of professional and community boards, including Kansas City Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, Nelson-Atkins Museum Advisory Board, Friends of the Zoo, Race for the Cure, Kansas City Free Health Clinic, Beth K. Smith Fund for Research and Results, KC Metro Child Trauma Advisory, Fern Webster Early Childhood Professional Development Scholarship Initiative, and the Women's Foundation Starr Symposium. She also dedicates service to multiple professional organizations, both regional and national, and recently concluded service as Co-Chair of the Professional Workforce Development Task Force for the Partners in Quality Mid-America Regional Council.
